Announcements

1.  Diana is leaving very soon to move to Douglasville, GA, to be with her daughter and grandson.  In an emergency meeting after today’s regular meeting, the board chose to try three or four caterers on a two week rotation.  Diana’s last meal will be Feb. 6.  The following meeting, Feb. 13, will be the Star Student Banquet.  We expect a dozen or so parents, teachers, students, and administrators.  We need to let the caterer (it will be a new one) know well in advance how many meals to plan for.  Please send regrets to me no later than Friday, Feb. 3, if you will not be attending the meeting on Feb. 13.  Likewise, if you plan to bring a guest, please let me know.

2.  Induction of New Members: Jeanne and Jerry Bovair, Rebecca Rassi, and D.C. Cain.  Warmest welcomes to all four.  Please accept the club’s humble apologies for delaying your new member training so long.  We look forward to your years of service to our county’s and world’s youth.

3.  Nominating Committee: We need at least five members for the nominating committee, which should include at least three past presidents.  The committee should create a slate of candidates for the officer positions and the three board slots that will be opening up this October.  The slate should be submitted in mid March but no later than mid April.  If you are interested in serving, please contact me.  Those of you who already expressed an interest in the Club Administration Committee are prime candidates, since nominating committee is one of that committee’s responsibilities.

4.  If you plan to attend the convention in New Orleans in late June, go to the district website (under events, select International Convention, then take link to KI website) to register.  Early registration has been extended to March 21 (probably because KI’s website registration isn’t working), after which the rate goes up.  Reserving hotel rooms is especially critical since our district has chosen a hotel that will fill up fast.  Registration fee is now $195.  The club budget for the convention is $2200.  To the extent available (first come, first served) that will cover registration of all attendees, then common transportation, and if there’s any left, toward room charges for those who have not attended overnight Kiwanis conventions or training.

5.  We want to give Diana a care package for her grandson Cody at her last meal for us on Feb. 6.  Cheryl Aston is putting this all together.  I expect to send out information very soon on what Cody likes so you can bring something to our Feb. 6 meeting to include in the care package.  Or, if you prefer, you can give cash to Cheryl and let her buy stuff for Cody.  Her email is teacher1@tds.net

6.  Interclub:  Jesup at noon on Friday, Feb. 3.  Those attending meet at the Presbyterian Church at 10:15, or at the Winn Dixie parking lot by the carwash at 10:30, so all can ride in the church van.

6.  Terrific Kids: Crooked River Elementary, Wed., Feb. 1, 1 pm; Woodbine Elementary, Thursday, Feb. 9, 9 am.

7.  Mid Winter training will be Saturday, March 17, in Milledgeville.  The club’s budget will cover registration for all, and for first-timers, room and, if we are unable to all ride together, mileage, all subject to the budgetary cap of $500.  Please notify Herb Rowland if you’re interested.  Information is on the district website.

Today’s program: Terry Dickson, Florida Times-Union
